Merchant Square Buildings B and C Approved
Westminster City Council has approved another two buildings in the Merchant Square scheme for an area near Paddington Station hot on the heels of the double approval last month.
This time the green light is for buildings B and C but still not building A, which is the skyscraper within Merchant Square.
Building B is a colourful largely office building containing 25,000 square metres of space that has been designed by Perkins & Will. One end of the project has a series of stacked double height atriums covering an entire side that creates a patchwork of colours of subtle pastels.
Standing adjacent to B will be Building C, also by Perkins & Will. It's another mid-rise block that will have 20,000 square meters of office space and distinctive cladding that utilises large amounts of solar shading in the form of vertical fins. Both of these buildings B and C will also contain retail outlets on the lower floors creating a new shopping precinct.
Rather forebodingly, this now leaves only the tower element of the project to be approved although whether this is a sign of the hostility of the council towards the showpiece element remains to be seen. Westminster City Council are traditionally hostile towards tall buildings, but many had hoped that their lack of outright opposition to Building A at Merchant Square signalled a new approach where skyscrapers were acceptable in certain limited parts of Westminster.
Still the approval of everything but the tower will keep the developer, the Paddington Development Corporation Limited busy for a number of years to come and they will be hoping that the centerpoint of their develop
