Newports Tallest Recommended For Approval
What could be Newport's newest tall building, City Spires, has been recommended for approval by the council's planning officers.
Developed by Modus Properties, the hotel and residential scheme will be 101 metres to roof with 30 floors making it easily the tallest building in the Welsh city. There will also be a ten floor office building as part of the scheme.
Designed by architects Gillespies, City Spires sleek and curving main tower will have 23 floors of residential accommodation consisting of 203 one and two bedroom apartments topping a 120 bedroom hotel that will be spread across the bottom 7 floors.
In addition to the main tower there is a substantial complex of associated buildings and new public space. These will include 8,547 square metres of retail and leisure accommodation, an 832 space multi-storey car park stacked on the retail area and a separate 10 floor, 7,432 square metres office building.
The development is even more impressive when taken next to plans for Friars Walk and City Vizion plus the fact that Newport only has a population of about 160,000 people and the current tallest building, Chartist Tower, is a mere 53 metres.
It has however been a tall order to get previous schemes off the ground with the Cambrian Centre proposals pronounced dead on arrival but Modus hope to have the first part of City Spires finished as soon as March, 2011.
