Portsmouths New Stadium Plans
These images are of the new planned hybrid stadium and apartment complex designed by Herzog & de Meuron for Portsmouth Football Club.
Developed by the club who have teamed up with the Sellar Property Group, famous for their landmark London Bridge Tower, the scheme will see a new 36,000 seater stadium built on a prominent waterside location creating a landmark to sit alongside the Spinnaker Tower.
Over 100,000 square metres of apartments will also be built in the project plus retail outlets whilst the current ground at Fratton Park will be redeveloped by MAKE Architects with 750 apartments in a scheme that has yet to be released.
The apartments at the new waterfront site will total about 1,500 looping around the new stadium in the manner of an outer ring with buffer zones of hanging gardens in between. The ring will increase from 11 to 21 floors at its peak on the south western side of the project creating the shape of a raised basin.
Design-wise, it is typical Herzog & de Meuron. They are famed for grand landmark public buildings with heavy organic influences and here is no exception with the proposal rising on the seafront like a huge barnacle encrusted rock.
There's also plenty of maritime references in there - the profile of it with the south western pinnacle creates a bow as if it is about to be launched into the sea as the stadium forms an area that successfully straddles both the land of the dockside and the sea beyond.
The unique positioning will in turn allow the construction of dock areas and a new location for HMS Warrior to be built that can improve access to the famous ship not to mention a historic counterpoint to the high-tech of Portsmouth's new stadium.
In all the £600 scheme will be a massive engineering challenge. Part of it involves reclaiming no less than 13 acres of land from the present harbour with work getting underway as soon as the summer of 2008 if it meets a favourable local response. This means Portsmouth could be playing in their new ground by 2011.
If the plans are realised to the same quality as Herzog & de Meuron's previous projects that include a massive concert hall in Hamburg and the Tate Modern in London, then Portsmouth will have a landmark building that can stamp it firmly on the European architecture scene as a happening 21st century city.
