Tallest Approved In Southampton

What will be the tallest building in Southampton when built rising 83 metres to the tip of the spire, has been approved by the local council.

East Park Terrace will contain a 21 storey hotel and an 11 storey "apart" hotel. There will also be a 14 storey block of 225 new apartments and a 12 storey office building containing 10,129 square metres of gross space within.

The tallest section, the 21 level hotel will be a four star building run by Radisson SAS that will have 204 bedrooms and a roof height of 64 metres, whilst the "apart" hotel will contain 122 semi-serviced apartments that can accommodate occupiers for months on end or only a few days if they so choose.

The scheme has been designed by PLC Architects who have come up with what can be politely described as a generic and non-offensive look that wins councils over thank's to the sheer lack excitement that raises as few complaints as possible.

It's similar to other dense multi-use, multi-block developments around the U.K such as Waterfront Plaza in Nottingham by employing the architectural vernacular of an overwhelmingly white, silver and grey post-modern look with sloping rooflines, the usual use of aluminium panels, and oodles of external balconies for detailing.

Included in the project are a number of ground-level improvements to be paid for by £660,000 of money set out in the Section 106 agreement. This will include works to the eastern edge of the nearby Andrew's Park, the closing of St Andrew's Road and the narrowing of East Park Road.

Work is due to begin on the £110 million development imminently with developer Imperial Property (Southampton) Ltd hoping construction will finish sometime in 2010.
